Browns Jubilee Windows - Part 2

Putting finishing touches to the Browns Jubilee windows
Following on from my last post about the making of Brown's Jubilee window display, I wanted to share a behinds the scenes look into the installation and work that went into making the display a reality.

On Sunday 27th May, a VERY hot and sunny day and a week before the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, I met Joanna Galanis, head of VM at Browns, and the rest of her team at the South Molton Street store to begin the installation of the Jubilee window display. We had lots of pairs of hands at the ready as there was a lot of work to do - paper  lions to suspend from backdrops, bunting to be drawn into the glass by hand, stands to be covered, mannequins to be dressed, and about a million paper diamonds to be cut out.

So, Starbucks and markers in hand, we got to work. Whilst Anissa Lee finished cutting out her paper jewellery, I began to draw diamond and bunting directly onto the window panes. It was quite tricky as each individual facet of each diamond required a couple of coats of acrylic paint, so my wrist was starting to hurt after maybe the second diamond.

Ivana Noel's paper animals arrived half way through the days and once these were up the windows really started to come to life.

There were more Starbucks and Dominos (eek!) breaks and at 10pm I had finally finished, although Jo stayed until 1am to finish the windows off. It was a long day and hard work, but the results were worth it and the windows were featured in Vogue the following day. Yay! Mrs B also said that the Jubilee windows were the best they had ever had - which definitely made it all worth it.

  1. wow Gem fascinating to see how you did it! i was wondering but i guess it's obvious that you'd put a template the other side of the glass. that probably wouldn't have occurred to me in a hundred years.

I LOVE the crest. You're developing a real signature style with all that heraldry and animals. I really like it (obviously!).
